About:

Shyh-Charng was born in Nagano, Japan in 1945. He moved to Taiwan with his parents in 1946 and arrived in Canada in 1974. Shyh-Charng attended National Taiwan University where he received his B.A. in Anthropology/Archaeology in 1970. Continuing his education in Canada, Lo received his M.A.  (Anthropology / Archaeology) from the University of British Columbia in 1977, and M.M. St. (Museum Studies) from University of Toronto in 1983.

In addition to painting, Shyh-Charng Lo started to learn lithography at Open Studio in Toronto in 1984. Due to his life long devotion to fine art, finally in 1989, Shyh-Charng resigned from Royal Ontario Museum where he had been working for a decade and moved to Vancouver to become a full time artist.

Shyh-Charng Lo’s art reveals nature in a sophisticated blend of insight and tranquility, combining the vast with the intimate in his veiled view of the West Coast. They are gentle yet persistent, muted yet referential and commodious, while at the same time, restrained.

Lo has attended more than 30 group shows internationally since 1970, and nine solo exhibitions in Canada and Taiwan after 1984.

Statement:

From the very start, I have always strived to express my mood in the landscapes of my paintings. Over thirty years later, the mood in the paintings is still the subject of my art, but the details of the landscapes are much less important than the feeling itself.

I started to learn lithography at "Open Studio" in Toronto in 1984. Since then, I have fallen in love with this medium and pursue the same goal with it as I do in my painting.

My art is created with the feelings and sentiment I hold for the world around me. The images of mountains and water especially have always moved me and lie close to my heart. My art does not chase after realism or any current art trend, but is simply an expression of my innermost peace of mind.
