He was the grandson of both Kiyomori and Goshirakawa-in. Kiyomori was depicted as being a very anxious grandfather at the time of his birth. Out of great joy, Kiyomori gave a large sum of money to Goshirakawa. Antoku became the 81st Emperor at the age of two. When he was 5, he fled to Kyoto with his mother. At the age of 8, he died by drowning in his Grandmother’s arms.
