Artist Statement

I was born during the Second World War in what is now North Korea, near the border of the former Soviet Union.  Immediately following the end of the war, I moved to Hiroshima, where I spent my childhood amidst the devastation of the A-bomb.  As a child, I always lived with a sense of indescrible danger and uncertainty.  I believe that these feelings permeated my body and awakened my desire to create.  In my creative process, the reality of the moment or the fact of being alive and present emerges from my psyche and transforms into shapes, colors, inspirations.

Our survival depends on production, which inevitably brings about destruction.  The consequence is that nature, which is central to our existence, is becoming drastically unbalanced.  We must pay attention once more to life itself: interconnected, vibrant, and mysterious life.  My mission is to leave behind the beauty of life in my art.
