Alumni of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.A. Asia Society, New York, N.Y., U.S.A. Publication: Daily Serving Safe-T-Gallery face book My
art is a
reflection of my
identity,
non-traditional and hybrid. Being an Asian woman who grew up in Western
culture has brought a unique perspective to
my life and that accentuates both the paradox and synergy between Asian
and Western
influences. It is this hybrid concept from which I draw my inspiration.
The benefit of
this cultural duality can be seen through my own artistic
journey. “Blurring Boundaries” is a body of work examines the visual beauty and metaphorical power of nu shu “female writing,” as a method of blurring the boundaries of Eastern aesthetics with contemporary Western art traditions; which is a reflection of my own diverse background. Nu shu was a women’s secret written language invented by uneducated peasant women centuries ago in south western China. The objective for the focus of my art is to share the concept of this amazing written language, which is on the brink of extinction. Nu shu’s purpose was to reflect feelings of pain, abuse, suppression and suffering in women’s married lives which began at seventeen years of age and lasted for the rest of their lives regardless of their circumstance. In the twenty-first century, these scenarios of suffering are still played out in many women’s lives around the world. Due to nu shu’s secretive nature and geographic isolation at that time, it did not spread to other provinces. As
an Asian
and a
woman, the written language is close to my own cultural background.
There is no doubt that this concept might make some viewers
feel uncomfortable in dealing with women’s issues. Through my art, I
hope I
can bridge cultural divides and promote constructive artistic dialogue,
as well as the
rich cultures of Asia and the West continue to
converge.
