Statement
Growing up in
Korea, I was surrounded by shanty towns, traditional villages and
blocks
of government housing projects packed together over seemingly endless
hills in a city of ten million people.
Most of these
traditional houses and villages are gone now, their place taken by
towering highrises, but the vision remains with me.
Now living in
Vancouver, I paint Korea, past and present, working to capture the
different eras and the repetitive patterns that seem to unfold
ceaselessly on Korea’s small landscape.
After building
a collection of paintings, I’ve been showing them at Winsor Gallery
here
in Vancouver. I’ve also participated in group shows at the Korea
Canada Tie Festival, I’m Grateful, and The Second Exhibition of The
Vancouver Korean Art Association.
Before
becoming a painter, I taught both in Seoul and here in Vancouver.
I’ve also worked in the publishing industry as chief editor of 2029, a
Vancouver magazine, and have written and illustrated several
books. I hold a degree in Theology from Korea.
