Opening Reception:  April 13 (Thursday) at 3 pm, 2006

We are very pleased to invite you to the opening of “Back to Xuan Paper” at 798 Space in Beijing, China.

Xuan paper, which is commonly known to westerners as rice paper, has been used by Chinese artists as the carrier for their creativity for over one thousand years.  The same as silk, it has been the paramount medium for paintings and calligraphic works.  Artists often use Xuan paper as their embryonic link to the Chinese roots and traditions.

In the “Return to Xuan Paper” exhibition, the artists, namely Chen Guang Wu, Luo Brothers and Wang Neng Tao, will demonstrate three totally different ways of utilizing Xuan paper for their creations.  Each of them has tried to apply the full capability of the medium to suit their works.

The works of Chen Guang Wu explore the extreme limits of ink on paper.  His calligraphic works are part of the tradition, yet the conceptual presentation is fluent in contemporary language.  Chen has invested the last decade of his time working with just ink and Xuan paper and he is showing his best parts in the exhibition.

The Luo Brothers’ playful lacquered works have captured the hearts of contemporary art lovers around the world.  In this exhibition, the three brothers from Beijing continue their “happiness formula” on paper.  Works on paper have helped them go beyond the size limitation of lacquered works.   As a result they have become more expressive with their creations.

Wang Neng Tao is one of the most versatile artists in the artist enclave (Song Zhuang) in Beijing.  His witty portraits of the world around him have helped heighten our appreciation of everyday life.  Wang paints, sculpts, takes photographs and prints as well as organizing artistic activities for his counterparts and art lovers.  In this exhibition, he is only showing his wood-block prints and is telling viewers that size does matter.
