Andrew
Lui swam to Hong Kong in 1970 when he was
19 after serving as a Red Guard for two years during the Cultural
Revolution and being sent to a reform farm for another two subsequent
years. His pilgrimage in life took him even
further away after a brief stop, two years again, in Hong Kong to
Ontario, Canada, where he studied art and established himself as one of
the leading artists in Montreal.
The
theme of his solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Pilgrim Progress, is actually a
reflection of his feelings and emotions over the past three decades. In
his artist statement, Lui says, to him, experiences are these moments
of
self-inflicted happiness from the ups and downs in
life. "In recent years, I have
indulged myself in painting the melancholy and exhilaration of the
voyageurs on the move". His works are expressionistic as
well as impressionistic, horses and men sharing a common destiny.
