Consciousness
A Solo Exhibition Featuring Shyh-Charng Lo
June 12 - July 26, 2003

Art Beatus Gallery is pleased to present "Consciousness" opening Thursday, June 12 and running through to July 26, 2003. The solo exhibition will feature Vancouver artist, Shyh-Charng Lo and his oil paintings on canvas. An opening reception will be held on June 12 from 6pm to 8pm and the artist will be in attendance.

Shyh-Charng Lo is moved by landscape. Most of his subjects come from the scenery around his home located in the West Side of Vancouver. His love of the ocean, mountains, and sky inspire him to not only paint the landscape itself, but to express his innermost state-of-mind. The peaceful, calming colours used by Lo create a tranquil effect on those who have had the opportunity to view his work. The essence of his paintings echo his mind, mood, and emotions and denotes his insight and passion for the beauty in nature surrounding him, thus providing strength and spirit in his work. Lo feels that only through a long and persistent process can the discovery of satisfactory artwork be achieved. It is far beyond any pre-planning or description - a good artwork is one that represents the true thoughts and feelings of the artist. His awareness on these levels is the reason for titling his solo exhibition, "Consciousness".

Lo was born in Nagano, Japan in 1945. At the early age of one, he moved with his parents to their native district of Hsin-chu. Although not known to have worked under any famous artists with the exception of some art teachers in both primary and high school, he won awards and recognition all throughout his school years. During his college years, his paintings were selected to participate in various prestigious exhibitions. After graduating from National Taiwan University, Shyh-Charng Lo chose to do his graduate studies in anthropology at the University of British Columbia and received his Master's Degree. He then moved to Toronto to further his museum training at the University of Toronto, later on working at the Royal Ontario Museum. Ten years later, he moved back to Vancouver and dedicated himself to his art.

Extremely critical of his own work, a painting may be polished countless times before completion. Any work that does not meet Shyh-Charng Lo's satisfaction will never be shown to the public until he finds a way to improve it. "I use my own style to describe this feeling. I think this is my art. I hope to keep my paintings simple yet meaningful; to make them standout from the ordinary and to make them forever enjoyable so that the viewer never tires looking at them; to hear the energy in the silence".
