Works of Freeman Lau

April 22 - May 6, 2005

Opening Ceremony - April 22, 2005, 6pm - 8pm:
Artist will attend the opening ceremony

Freeman Lau has been developing ideas around chairs for quite a few years. He relentlessly works on this artistic pursuit as an escape from his hectic schedule overseeing a well-known design business.

He says that he starts his conceptual manipulation on chairs for one simple reason: chairs are basic to our daily life and naturally connected to people. He plays on chairs hoping to connect them to people as well as to connect chairs to themselves.

Lau is a leading commercial designer and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Design Centre.

His realized works consist of stainless steel chairs of exceptional shapes and exaggerated sizes, connecting chairs that link up to each other in various imaginative possible arrangements and gigantic chairs that are built out of drinking water bottles.

In this exhibition, Lau will show working models of some of his conceptual designs together with some fully functional finished chairs. After Hong Kong, the exhibits will travel to Tokyo for an exhibition there.
