Winter Group Exhibition

Featuring Works by Qin Feng, Won Seok Lim, Miuh Yang, and Cheung Yee

December 5, 2005 to February 3, 2006

Art Beatus (Vancouver) Consultancy Ltd. welcomes the upcoming season with a special presentation of works to warm your insides and melt the frosty days of winter. Abstract ink works by Qin Feng, snow-themed paintings by Won Seok Lim, cozy mixed media works by Miuh Yang, and striking paper castings by Cheung Yee will be on display from December 5, 2005 to February 3, 2006.

Qin Feng was born in 1961 in Xinjiang Province in China. Having graduated from the Shandong Art Institute in 1985, Qin spent ten years winding his way towards his artistic pursuit. He left China in 1996 for Berlin, Germany, where he worked and stayed until he moved to the US in 1999. He currently divides his time between his two studios in Beijing and Boston. Speaking about his Civilization Landscapes series, Qin hopes to create his own language and system of signs and symbols, re-creating and representing ancient cultures and civilizations that disappeared long ago.

Born in 1966 in the heavily populated region of Seoul, Korea, Won Seok Lim, a theology major and self-taught artist, presents a new series of mixed media paintings, some of which are winter-themed works. On display will be his painting, ‘Soccer Field’, in which he delicately captures snow falling into a large empty field, undisturbed with goalposts slightly visible in the foreground. The sensation of quietude and calm in his work is ever-present, providing audiences with a feeling that the empty space they are viewing is completely their own. Won Seok Lim lives and works in Vancouver, BC.

Originally focusing on fashion design and the commercial art business when living in Korea, Miuh Yang moved to Vancouver and was quickly taken by the city’s flowers, trees, and greenery. The influence of Vancouver’s natural surroundings inspired Miuh to take her love of fabric, texture and nature and create art. Similar in appearance to patch-work quilts, Miuh’s delicately designed pieces combine fabric, paint, beading, and ribbon while layers of cut-out shapes of flowers, leaves, and threaded lines resembling grass are worked together to make her delightfully warm pieces.

Currently based in California and born in 1936 in Guangzhou, China, Cheung Yee is a familiar name among art collectors. He is one of the most recognized and respected artists in the field of sculpture and is a pioneer in the modern art movement of Hong Kong. His renowned paper castings were developed in the seventies and won him an MBE honor in 1979 in recognition of his contributions to the art of Hong Kong. His distinctive style presents a powerful sense of form, energy and strength, and is inspired by cultural elements of prehistoric China while using the framework of modern western art. Cheung Yee is the only artist in the history of Hong Kong who has been invited to conduct three solo exhibitions in the prestigious Hong Kong Museum of Art. His works are in many international private and corporate collections while his large-scale sculptures can be seen all around the world.
