Marilyn Monroe & Friends

Collector's edition photographs by Monroe's favourite photographer, Sam Shaw

September 27, 2006 - October 17, 2006

Opening Ceremony - September 27, 2006 , 6pm - 8pm:

Sam Shaw (1912-1999) took photographs for the covers of Life and Look magazines in the fifties. He made his name in the cinema world with his captivating photographs of Marlon Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire". Now, after more than half a century, Sam Shaw is preeminently remembered for his candid shoots of Marilyn Monroe.

In 1951, Monroe, a new comer to the silver screen caught Shaw's attention. He followed her career and fortunately preserved, for later generations, the fascinating power of her beauty. Shaw, then an advisor to Billy Wilder, also suggested the famous sequence of that full-blown skirt over a subway ventilation lattice on Lexington Avenue in "The Seven Year Itch".

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Monroe's birthday, Art Beatus Gallery at Exchange Square will exhibit 22 photographs of Marilyn Monroe by Shaw from the Shaw Family Archive in an exhibition named "Marilyn Monroe and Friends". Included in the "Friends" section are photographs of Alfred Hitchcock, Anthony Quinn, Gary Grant, Marlon Brando, Remy Schneider and Sean Connery.

These collector's limited edition photographs are signed and numbered by Sam Shaw's son, Larry, who has worked closely with his father since 1958 and some of the photographs could not be attributed to one or the other. The international edition number of these photographs is 30.

Marilyn Monroe and Friends is the signing off exhibition of Art Beatus Gallery from the Exchange Square space and will run from September 27 to October 17, 2006.
