May Contain Small Parts

Plastic Works by Sang Won Sung

June 1 - August 31, 2007

Opening Reception: Friday, June 1, 2007, 3 - 6pm, Artist in Attendance

Art Beatus (Vancouver) Consultancy Ltd. is pleased to present, “May Contain Small Parts”. The exhibition features works by artist, Sang Won Sung who uses common plastic objects, most particularly parts from plastic dolls, and then playfully recombines and restructures the pieces into humorous and comical animals, superheroes, insects, and other easily recognized iconic figures.  The exhibition opens with an afternoon reception on Friday, June 1 at 3pm and closes at 6pm; the artist will be in attendance and the public is welcome to attend.

Sang Won Sung was born in 1965 in Seoul, Korea.  He graduated from the FAAP Artes Plastica (Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado) in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1986 and then moved back to Korea to further his education; he graduated from Hong Ik University in 1990.  Since returning to Brazil in 1994, Sang has since had a number of exhibitions and his work has been included in several art fairs in Sao Paulo, Korea and Portugal.  “Plastic containers, parts of toys, doll’s arms and legs, screws… all sorts of things surrounding us in our modern daily life are what I need to make my figures. These stuffs, ordinary and with nothing special, are my favorites because they belong to my intimate environment. Plastic is my chosen material because it gives a modern flavor and a profusion of colors that no other material seems to offer. So, it relates better with the “pop dolls” that I seek to materialize.”

The artist re-works the objects he chooses into many quirky amalgamations before a piece is ever complete and he is satisfied, “I’d like to distinguish my work from what is commonly taken as art under the sign of recycling. For, the objects that effectively take part in my pieces have undergone a lot of reflection and trials in different combinations. Different objects with their diversity of forms are gathered in a new kind of rendezvous bringing about a new thing, although, basically and at first sight, it is easy to say which objects are there”.

“May Contain Small Parts” begins Friday, June 1, 2007 and runs through to Friday, August 31, 2007.  Art Beatus (Vancouver) is open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm.  The office is closed weekends and holidays.  Calling or emailing to arrange an appointment is highly recommended.  Admission is free.
