September 3 - 25, 2009

Curated by Amy Y. Li

Artists, Zhang Qikai and Ma Yanling, will be present in the opening on September 3rd, 2009 (Thursday), 6 to 8pm

The artists in Three on the Road exhibition represent three diversified approaches in art creation. Their specific works are visually different, very much influenced and symbolic of the environs and contacts that the artists subsist at this juncture of time thus heightening the vibes and resourcefulness of their interactions.

Zhang Qikai, born in Beijing in 1967, furthered his studies in Milan, Italy at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and received his masters’ degree from the Department of Multi-Media in Milan’s Institute of Design after graduating from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China in 1992. He has lived and worked in Europe for well over ten years before returning to the art scene in Beijing recently. He now splits his time between Milan and Beijing. The Chinese roots are very vibrant in Zhang’s works, whether they are two-dimensional or three-dimensional, yet westernised in their expression.

Wang Yu received her bachelor and masters’ degrees from the Art Academy of Nanjing in 1995 and 1999. She taught in the Fine Art Department of Shanghai University for a while in 2000 before leaving for Paris to study her masters’ degree in the Plastic Art Institute of University of Paris I. Originally she planned to stay there for three to five years but later decided not to return to China. She has developed an innovative new medium to depict her works emphasizing on re-creating an impression of flesh and blood on canvas.

Of this company of three, Ma Yanling’s roadmap of creating is purely Chinese. She lives and works in Beijing. Her earlier works around year 2000 were elaborate nets of coloured lines. She repeatedly painted tightly arranged straight lines to form her compositions. She started adding images as background to her compositions in 2005. Ma adopts portraits of famous female movie stars of the 1940’s to her compositions of lines expanding her paintings to a new dimension.

Amy Ying Li, curator of this exhibition, said that Ma’s veiled faces highlighted the helplessness and melancholy of our times and the nostalgia that the works brought put in focus the vanishing kindness and beauty of human nature; and for the artist herself, she wished the viewers would zero in on the eyes of the females in her paintings as they all had a glow of gentleness, purity and chastity that was rarely found in the eyes of women nowadays.
