Breathing

Works by Tomoko Taniguchi & Takehiro Yoshimitsu
Curated by Yuka Nakamura

March 5 - March 26, 2010

In March, Art Beatus will re-open our gallery space in a new location on 50 Peel Street, SOHO, with an exhibition - Breathing, prepared for us by Yuka Nakamura, an aspiring young female curator from Yokohama, Japan.

Curator & Artists will be present in the Opening Reception on March 5th, 2010 (Friday), 6-8pm

In the exhibition, Yuka Nakamura will present the works of two artists, Tomoko Taniguchi and Takehiro Yoshimitsu, who are generational apart in their ages and visually poles apart in their artistic expressions.

Nakamura
says Ki (氣 in Chinese) accrues when we breathe as breathing involves exhaling and inhaling.  These two acts has an inseparable relationship and the intervals between them generate different kinds of rhythms.  It is the rhythm of life that we feel ourselves and creates the impression that we convery to others.

Between the two groups of exhibits there is a tension and the rhythm from that tension generate the breathing from both of them, and that Ki in turn will hopefully reach the hearts of the visitors coming to the exhibition.

Taniguchi
born during the World War II in what is now North Korea. She returned to Japan and spent her childhood amidst the devastation of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.  Her works aim to convey the reality of the moment and the fact of being alive in the mixed media collages. She says that her mission in art is to leave behind in her works the beauty of life.

Yoshimitsu,
on the other hand, was born more than 30 years after the war yet he has to face with the emptiness and uneasiness that come with living in contemporary Japan at a time of peace. The way why he applies and removes paints from his canvases is his effort in confronting the saturated condition that he is experiencing in his daily life. He wants to initiate dialogues with other people and that by creating and exhibiting his works he hopes to find meaning for his own existence.
