Journeys of the Heart

Works by Hiroe Matsushita

October 6 - 26, 2011

Artist will be present in the Opening Reception: October 6 (Thursday), 2011, 6pm - 8pm

The paper collage works of Hiroe Matsushita are neither for the impatient nor for those who have no time for premium pieces.  Her works encapsulate the serene depiction of all the soul-searching journeys that she has made.

Very often audiences have mistaken her works as watercolour paintings as they are visually similar and especially for those viewers who only browse superficially.  But for those who are willing to pause and invest their time they will find that her works are little treasures that contain both the fine intricacies of details and the richness of her touch.

Matsushita actually builds her pieces up with layer upon layer of coloured cut paper or simply using just the coloured paper fibres.  She continues the process until the images become three-dimensional capturing all the subtleties that she wants.  Each piece usually occupies her weeks if not months.

“Good pieces of art should be far more than just passing out immediate shock-impacts.  The sensation of tranquility, as a matter of fact, possesses the wonderful power of touching the emotion of the viewers.  Instead of letting myself being dragged unwillingly through the emptiness of artistic exaggeration, I prefer to work quietly on pieces that comes closer to my heart,”  Matsushita says in her artist’s statement.

Matsushita studied Japanese painting and graduated from the University of Art of the City of Kyoto, Japan.  Her paper collage works have won her numerous governor’s and mayor’s awards in Japan since 2003.  She exhibits mainly in Japan, France and Switzerland and the Journeys of the Heart exhibition is her first solo in Hong Kong.
