The majority of the vinyl paintings in this
exhibition is selected from Chang's
“Dog Walker” series that began in 2024.
According to the artist, “In the city I live
in, in my neighbourhood and in the apartment
I live in, I often see dogs and dog lovers
and families, and they are everywhere.” Chang
has curiously observed in this ubiquitous
demographic the emotional interactions
between humans and canines. Whether the dog
owners are casual joggers or chic
fashionistas, the artist has tried to convey
in these vinyl ink paintings this seemingly
natural affinity that people have towards
their beloved dogs.
By chance, Chang developed what he
calls vinyl ink painting in the spring of
2018 when he was working on an experimental
hand-painted animation short film. His
alchemy began as he tried to paint with ink
used in traditional Chinese painting onto
transparent celluloid film used in
traditional animation. Chang
discovered “some very wonderful texture
effects...[that are] very accidental. Every
stroke, every piece of ink and colour will
produce different and unpredictable
changes...[on] contact with vinyl. I feel
the magic of this change.” Over the past few
years, this new practice has led him to
master these wonderfully serendipitous
results in the works featured in this
exhibition.
Joe Chang
was born in Shenyang, China and currently
lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Before
moving to Canada in 1990 and working for the
National Film Board of Canada as an
animation director, Chang earned a
Bachelor of Arts in Printmaking at Lu-Xun
Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China and
a Master of Fine Arts at Tama Art University
in Tokyo, Japan. Chang has written
and directed several animated films and has
exhibited his films and artwork in numerous
film festivals and galleries around the
world.
