Qin YufenExhibited at Art Beatus Vancouver November 6 - December 15, 1998 Echolot"Modern art of the West has a strong tradition of
confrontation and conflict. It generally seeks contradiction, not harmony, as a
driving force in history. Whole ness seems a rather tricky, dangerously elusive
concept. Only isolated artists oriented themselves meditatively in modernism,
not least in the confrontation with other cultures...." This book not only
offers samples of Qin Yufen works but an inside view of the effects modern art
is having on the East and West from different points of view. Qin Yufen was born
and raised in China but upon arriving in Germany she never left, perhaps this
quote from her sums it up, "Chinese culture is like the blood in my body, but
the Western world.. is the air I breathe."

Zhu JinshiExhibited at Hong Kong Arts Centre, April 9th to 14th, 1997 Space to EmptinessZhu Junshi's Space of emptiness is an impartment of Zhu's thoughts, opening a way for us to understand the term of emptiness, by way of his deciphering. Nothingness is the precondition of being and the actual prerequisite of being. This means that being and nothingness are related to each other and create each other. It is also the aura of emptiness that creates harmony. But Zhu Jinshi also intends another kind of emptiness and here is again very close to out Western understanding: he means the cultural emptiness he associates with the societal condition of his homeland. His Artistic existence in Beijing differs radically from in the west. His artistic gestures are necessarily small, the material inconspicuous. 49 pages, English / German, Full Color, 1997
